Katies Korner Childcare provides children with stimulating, age-appropriate programming in a nurturing setting. We offer a variety of interesting activities and help children to develop a good self-concept and healthy feelings of self-worth. Play should be seen as an essential experience that extends, enhances and enriches a child’s learning. We emphasize the whole child with programming that meets the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs of the individual.
We facilitate the use of problem-solving skills rather than seeking adults to solve conflicts. To cultivate personal responsibility, children are held responsible for their belongings. Above all, we teach respect: the children learn to respect adults and peers, and learn that they have the right to be respected.
Katies Korner has an open door policy and welcomes input from parents. We believe healthy exchanges between parents and staff models cooperation for the children and help to ensure that the needs of each child and their family are met.
Why is play important?
Play enhances a child’s language development, encourages creativity and problem solving. Play provides a context through which the child develops a representational thought, and essential foundation for reading, mathematics and science.
What does ‘play’ mean to a child?
Many of the skills necessary in adult life are developed through play; it can be said that play is like ‘work’ for children. What may look like a meaningless way to pass the time, in the eyes of children, are an absorbing way to learn new skills, try new techniques, and learn about the world around them. A child’s greatest need then, is to play. At Katie’s Korner we teach a love of play whether it’s solitary or in a group. We let children grow, develop honesty and loyalty, and express their feelings as individuals, all while cultivating a love of learning.
